Even when everything’s there in the background – solid, tested and trusted – the user interface is what will ultimately determine how well used software is. SAP is known and used by some of the largest organisations in the world, but like many giants, it’s lost some its agility. The bigger you are the less room you’ve got for manoeuvring and the harder it is to deliver the flexibility that your customers want and, in many cases, need. If you’ve already got SAP in place, the chances are you’ll look to stay with the same provider for satellite applications. If you’re looking for HR tech, you’ll check out SAP HR, and knowing what you do about SAP’s reputation, you’ll be confident you’re doing the right thing. I’m not saying you’re not, but it’s worth knowing that the UI with SAP HR isn’t the most engaging.
Imagine you’re trying to change a business process. Now, throw a new program into the mix that users find difficult to get to grips with. Where’s the success of your change project heading? Before long, it’s not just a case of not moving forward, but a case of resistance, stalemate and failure. Paying attention to what gets software used is critical. Mobile app developers know that it’s not what’s underneath that determines whether an app is a hit or a miss, but the user interface. Get that right and you’re onto a winner.
Fortunately, most user interfaces can be given a lift with specially created and embedded content. You don’t have to face an uphill battle to get your people on board, but your business may well face one if you don’t.
